Testimonial
Thoroughly enjoyed out shore excursion tour and the tour lived up to the name as we really did get to "Discover Nassau". Our guide was awesome. Gave a wonderful account of the history of Nassau while seeing the sites with plenty of humor thrown in. The final stop at Atlantis was short and we were given the option to stay and just catch a taxi for the short 5 min ride back to the cruise ship terminal which we did. Overall, a great way to experience Nassau.
Nassau's History
If you're visiting Nassau, think of the city as a compact living history tour where turquoise waters meet pirate lore, colonial buildings, and vibrant Bahamian culture.

Quick historical snapshot for visitors
- Pre-colonial: Lucayan Taínos were the island's first inhabitants — you'll find this heritage referenced in local museums.
- Pirate era (early 1700s): Nassau was a pirate haven (think Blackbeard and the "Republic of Pirates"). Much of the city's dramatic lore comes from this time.
- British colonial period: Forts, colonial architecture, and structures like the Queen's Staircase reflect British rule and the island's maritime importance.
- Post-war to independence: Nassau grew into the nation's capital and tourist hub; independence came in 1973. Today the city blends history with resorts, finance, and local culture.
Must-see historic spots:
- Queen's Staircase: 66-step limestone stairway carved by enslaved people — quick, central, and photogenic.(included)
- Fort Fincastle and the Water Tower: Panoramic views and colonial military history. (included)
- Fort Charlotte: Largest fort with tunnels, cannons, and sea views.
- Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation: Compact, important exhibits on slavery and Bahamian history.
- National Art Gallery / cultural sites: Bahamian art and history displays.
- Bay Street & Parliament Square: Colonial buildings, government houses (included)
- Straw Market & Nassau Historic District: Crafts, local food, and lively streets that show everyday Bahamian life. (included)
- Atlantis Resort & Paradise Island (included)
Cultural highlights to time your visit around
- Junkanoo: Colorful street processions held Dec 26 and Jan 1 (and smaller parades at Carnival-style events); a must-see if your schedule aligns.
- Local food: Try conch dishes, fish, and street snacks in downtown eateries to taste history-driven cuisine.
Bottom line: Nassau's compact center makes it easy to move from pirate legends and colonial forts to lively markets and cultural institutions in a single day, giving you both entertaining stories and an understanding of Bahamian heritage. Let Discover Nassau Town & Atlantis show you around.
